Understanding Facelift Surgery
Age, genetics, sun damage, and lifestyle factors eventually catch up to all men and women regardless of how well they care for their skin. These aging signs often develop in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging tissues and can make one self-conscious about their appearance.
Facelift surgery is performed to minimize or correct common signs of aging. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Kim performs facelift surgery for women and men in Denver, Colorado.
What Is a Facelift?
This facial rejuvenation procedure addresses lines and sagging tissues across the lower two-thirds of the face and neck. While this plastic surgery does not address the eyes or forehead, it is commonly combined with other surgeries that do, allowing for total facial enhancement.
Facelift surgery is a customizable procedure with different variations of invasiveness and correction.
Why Choose a Facelift?
Women and men choose this cosmetic surgery to:
- Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
- Lift sagging midface tissues
- Minimize deep creases like nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Minimize jowls
- Address vertical neck banding
- Reduce submental fat (double chin)

What Are My Facelift Options?
Full Facelift
A traditional facelift tightens the skin and tissues between the top of the cheeks and the neck. This rejuvenation technique involves incisions on both sides of the face, starting at the temporal hairline and continuing down and around the ear. Incisions may be adjusted for men to ensure they do not interfere with facial hair growth.
Minimally Invasive Facelift
The minimally invasive facelift, or QuickLift®, addresses visible signs of aging in the mid to lower region of the face. This is ideal for men and women who still want to look like themselves, just more youthful, rested, and refreshed.
This technique lifts and defines the cheeks, tightens the jowls, and smooths the neck with minimal downtime.
Neck Lift
While a facelift usually always includes a neck lift, a neck lift can be performed without a facelift. This procedure addresses vertical neck banding, loose neck lift, and submental fat.
everything is under one roof

How Is a Facelift Performed?
Facelift surgery is a customizable outpatient procedure. While the exact steps may vary, you can expect the following:
- You will have an opportunity to discuss your facelift with Dr. Kim and review any pre-operative details.
- You will be given intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to keep you comfortable and safe. A board-certified anesthesiologist (MD) conducts all anesthesia.
- Pre-marked incisions are made on the sides of the face.
- Internal tissues, muscles, and skin are lifted, tightened, and secured.
- Stretched skin is trimmed along the incision.
- Sutures and skin adhesives are used to close these incisions.
- An incision is made beneath the chin to reduce submental fat, tighten the platysma bands, and smooth the skin in the neck.
- Dressings, drains, and a headwrap are placed to assist in healing.
- You will be taken to a recovery area, where you will be monitored for several hours.
What Is My Facelift Recovery Like?
Following your facelift, you can expect to be swollen, sore, and bruised, and your skin will likely feel tight. Any discomfort can be lessened with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.
Most patients return to work and regular activities within one to two weeks but should avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks or longer.
To help speed recovery, sleep with your head upright, stay hydrated, and follow a healthy diet.
When Will I See My Facelift Results?
You will start to notice the results of your facelift immediately after your surgery; however, the full extent will be camouflaged by the bruising and swelling. Most patients see gradual results over the following weeks and months.
While your results will be long lasting, facelift surgery does not stop the natural aging process.
