Understanding Rhinoplasty
Your nose is a central feature of your face and a crucial part of the first impression you give to the world every day. It has the ability to balance your facial features or throw off your facial proportions and draw unwanted attention. Some people are naturally born with larger noses that are disproportionate to the rest of their face, or perhaps are crooked or have a hump. Other times, injuries can cause your nose to become crooked or misshapen.
Rhinoplasty provides a solution to reshape your nose and create facial harmony among your features. Dr. Geoffrey Kim performs rhinoplasty in Denver, Colorado, to improve the nose’s appearance and make patients feel confident in how they look.

What Is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as nose surgery or a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the structure of the nose. This procedure can be performed to enhance the nose aesthetically or also to fix breathing problems.
Why Choose Nose Surgery?
Nose surgery can make you feel more confident about your nose and the rest of your facial features by creating a proportional balance within your face. Other rhinoplasty benefits include:
- Reduce the size of your nose
- Improve the shape and angle of your nose
- Remove humps on the nose bridge
- Reduce nostril size
- Correct nasal asymmetry
- Improve the appearance of a large, droopy, or hooked nose tip
- Fix structural issues that cause breathing issues
During a consultation with Dr. Kim, you’ll have an opportunity to discuss your concerns and goals for surgery.
What Are My Rhinoplasty Options?
Based on this discussion, Dr. Kim will create a treatment plan and let you know which rhinoplasty options best suit your needs.
Open Rhinoplasty
During an open rhinoplasty, incisions are made on the outside of the nose. These incisions allow Dr. Kim to reshape the nose. This is usually the best option for people who need extensive correction.
Closed Rhinoplasty
A closed rhinoplasty involves hidden incisions inside the nasal passages. This is a great option for people who don’t want visible scars after surgery.
Tip Rhinoplasty
If you only want to adjust the tip of your nose, then a tip rhinoplasty may be right for you. Either opened or closed rhinoplasty techniques can be used to perform this type of rhinoplasty.
Septoplasty
A septoplasty can straighten the septum for patients wanting to correct a deviated septum that is causing breathing problems.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Every nose surgery that Dr. Kim performs is tailored to fit each patient’s face. The specific techniques used during the procedure will vary from patient to patient, but you can expect the following:
- When you come in for your procedure, Dr. Kim will go over your surgical plan and give you a chance to ask any last-minute questions before the surgery begins.
- You will receive IV sedation or general anesthesia by a board-certified anesthesiologist to make you comfortable during surgery.
- Dr. Kim will create incisions inside or outside the nose, depending on what type of rhinoplasty you have chosen.
- Your nose will be adjusted and reshaped to address problems and match your goals.
- Dr. Kim will carefully close the incisions.
- A nasal splint or gauze may be used to cover the nose and assist in the healing process.
What Is Nose Surgery Recovery Like?
Most patients can return to work and light daily activities one week after surgery. Everyone’s body heals differently, so it’s important to ask Dr. Kim when you can be cleared for activities so you don’t push yourself.
During recovery, you can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort. Applying cold compresses to the area and taking pain medications can help with these symptoms. Make sure to follow Dr. Kim’s recovery instructions to ensure that your nose heals smoothly.
When Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results?
The majority of the swelling will go away a few weeks after surgery; however, it may take up to a year before your nose surgery results fully settle into your face. Rhinoplasty results are designed to be long-lasting and enjoyed for many years. However, nose surgery cannot stop natural aging, so there may be some changes to your nose as you age.
